RAISE (Rural Arts In Science Education) is an education for sustainable development project based at Beenleigh Meadows Farm near Totnes in South Devon providing a curriculum for learning the practical skills required for sustainable living. Different tutors and course leaders run a varied curriculum of short courses to suit the broad spectrum of sciences and rural arts connected to sustainability. Practical teaching uses a holistic, inter-disciplinary approach.

Our emphasis is on education for action: moving beyond single issues to look at the more fundamental influences that shape our lives.We have worked in more than a dozen countries, from the UK and the USA to Thailand and Bhutan. Our programme in Ladakh, or 'Little Tibet', where we have been running a wide range of 'hands on' projects since 1975, has won international acclaim for countering the negative effects of conventional development in that region. The Turquoise Mountain Foundation was founded in 2006 by HRH The Prince of Wales and H. E. Hamid Karzai, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, to help preserve some of Afghanistan’s rich architectural and cultural heritage for future generations. Turquoise Mountain is investing in the regeneration of the historic commercial centre of Kabul, providing basic services, saving historic buildings and constructing a new bazaar and galleries for traditional craft businesses. It has established Afghanistan's first Higher Education Institute for Afghan Arts & Architecture gathering some of the greatest Masters in Afghanistan and training students to produce masterpieces in wood, calligraphy and ceramics.
